Extra Curricular Activities
Please scroll down the page to read about the various extra-curricular activities we provide at the Senior School.
Duke of Edinburgh
The Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme presents a challenge to participants in various aspects of personal development. This includes learning new skills, serving the community, keeping physically active, and learning to be self-sufficient in planning and carrying out camping expeditions.
Girls are currently able to start with their Award during year 10 and have until their 25th birthday to complete it. We currently have 12 girls who are close to completing their Bronze awards, and three sixth form girls who are working towards Gold, the most demanding level of the Award. This year the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme has received an increased amount of interest and over 25 students have registered for the Bronze and Silver levels of the Award.
Film Club
Film Club is held every Monday lunch time in the Autumn and Spring terms for years 11 - 13. Its aims are to bring a wide range of films to the notice of the members, to fill in the gaps left by the multiplex distributors by showing films that don't often make wide general release and to provoke discussion on the art of film and film-making.
Middle School Debating
This group meets once a week to enjoy the pleasures of structured debate and discussion. Debating skills are taught within the English curriculum, and this club is for all who enjoy provocative debate and argument.
Public Speaking
Entry to a number of competitions during the school year entails coaching for all girls who enjoy the formal process of public speaking. Although essentially a team skill, there are competition opportunities for individual speakers. Recent successes include the sixth form team reaching the regional finals of the Rotary Clubs competition for senior teams at Wycombe Abbey School, having won the local and district heats.
Prayer group
All girls are welcome to visit the Chapel during break times if they have the need for personal prayer or quiet space. On Wednesdays a group of students gather together at lunchtime to reflect on the assembly theme of the week, meditating on how to make it relevant in our own lives and asking God to help others.
Strategy Club
The strategy club is open to all years and is designed to promote logical thinking through games and activities. Pupils make use of the many games available to them such as Connect Four, Master Mind and Downfall as well as the more usual Chess and Draughts.
The girls also have the opportunity to learn other games such as Backgammon and Cribbage which also helps with their numeracy skills and encourages them to think ahead. Competitions are organised on a regular basis.
Pupils are also encouraged to extend their mathematical knowledge using puzzles such as the Tower of Hanoi and use is made of the computer software available.
Greek Club
Greek club is open to Years 7 and 8, at present and is held every Monday at lunch break. The members can recite and write the Greek alphabet. They are practising reading and writing Greek words by means of oral games, card games, puzzle sheets, tracing and other activities. One of their sessions consists of tasting Greek foods.
Art Club
There is an Art Club on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday lunch-time, which is for all age groups. They can enjoy doing personal and individual work and they can explore extension work beyond their class bound studies.
Choir
The senior choir represents the school annually at Presentation Evening in November, The Lourdes Concert in October, The Carol Service in December and the Gala Concert in March. The choir also teams up with the Preparatory School's choir and the London Welsh Male Voice Choir in a carol concert at the Royal Military Academy in Sandhurst.
Orchestra
The Orchestra represents the school at the Maidenhead festival in November, they have won many prizes including the best senior school entry. Members of the Orchestra also play ar events outside of school such as the Ascot Charity Ball.
Swing Band
The Swing Band represents the school at various school concerts on site and at other venues. The Swing Band will be going to Lake Garda in Italy in July 2004 for a 6 day tour, giving three concerts.
Other Music Clubs available include: Recorder Club, Clarinet & Sax Ensemble, Flute Group, Guitar Club, Rock Band.
Textiles Club
The Textiles club is held regularly at lunch time for at least one session a week. Pupils may develop their own practical ideas, make gifts at Christmas tile or continue their practical classwork. The club is open to pupils of all age groups. Projects recently completed have included decorated fabric gift bags, dream catchers and embroidered cushions.
Drama Clubs
Our drama department offers a wide range of challenging and exciting activities for pupils who enjoy developing their skills in acting.
LAMDA (London Academy of Musical and Dramatic Art) - we offer extra-curricular LAMDA teaching where pupils are taught in pairs preparing monologues and duologues from a wide variety of texts and styles. The examinations take place three times a year. Our pupils achieve 100% pass rate with over 75% achieving distinctions and honours. This activity increases confidence as well as supporting the speaking and listening element of the English syllabus. Once a year we put on a showcase of LAMDA work, often in conjunction with GCSE and A level performances to show our parents and friends.
Year 7 Drama Club - this takes place once a week in the lunch hour and is run by the sixth form drama captain. This club is very popular and open to anyone in year 7 who enjoys drama.
Main School Production - in conjunction with the music department we put on a yearly production. Past plays and musicals have included Oliver, Daisy Pulls it Off, Orpheus in the Underworld, 101Dalmatians and Sepia & Song. The 2010 production will be Annie.
Maidenhead Drama Festival - Each year two short plays either devised or scripted are prepared and entered into this prestigious festival. This is enourmous fun as it gives the opportunity to work in a high tech, purpose built theatre environment and to be assessed by a professional director. For the past few years all groups have been extremely successful in winning all the youth trophies for both performance and design. In 2009, the school won 5 trophies at the festival and went on to compete in the final of the All England Drama Festival.
Other opportunities in drama arise on a reglar basis where pupils prepare and perform short plays for special occasions such as prizegiving and open day.
ICT Club
The ICT Club is open every lunch time and after school 2 days a week. The club is open to all pupils for private study across all curriculum areas. Girls have access to the same packages that are available during lesson times. In addition they can use the scanners, digital camera, internet and email facilities.
Pupils are invited to book one-to-one tutorials any lunch time. Pupils will typically take advantage of this time if they have missed an ICT lesson due to absence from school.
Other Clubs
The following clubs also run at lunch time and after school:
- Netball
- Swimming
- Hockey
- Athletics
