Food Science

The Food Science department is a thriving area of the school.  Pupils enjoy their lessons here and are keen to study this subject to higher levels.  High standards are expected. 

Aims:

  • To educate our pupils to make healthy food choices and to give sound grounding in nutrition and current dietary needs
  • To develop practical skills
  • To encourage economical use and choice of ingredients and energy
  • To develop good organisational skills and the efficient use of time
  • To ensure that the pupils work safely and follow good hygiene practices
  • To foster innovation, originality and creativity
  • To develop within each pupil a sense of respect for the room and care of
  • To alert pupils to the effectiveness and validity of claims made by manufacturers and advertising

 

Key Stage 3
Year 7 - pupils learn to use the Food Science room, its equipment and tools with safety and efficiency.  They develop practical skills through the preparation and cooking of food to make a range of simple dishes.

Year 8 - Practical designing and making skills are further developed by working with food to produce more complex dishes.  Individual creativity is encouraged.  The use of electrical equipment is introduced.  Pupils are encouraged to become more self-reliant.

Year 9 – Practical designing and making skills are developed to a higher standard through clearer knowledge and understanding of processes and techniques used when working with food.  Organisation and efficiency is encouraged in practical work.  Pupils evaluate technological developments in food products.

Key Stage 4
The department prepares pupils for public examinations:

  • GCSE Home Economics: Food & Nutrition
  • AS level Home Economics
  • A2 level Home Economics

 

We have a 100% pass rate at GCSE, AS and A2 level.
