School Work for Spring Term 2012

Pupils are expected to use this time wisely. They must ensure that all homework is completed, that classwork is up to date and that any revision or unfinished work is undertaken. Having finished their work pupils have an ideal opportunity to read around their subjects.

 

In addition to class work set, Year 7 to 9 pupils can access the http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/bitesize/  website to consolidate their learning. Year 10 and 11 pupils can access the same website for revision and coursework purposes. Sixth Formers should be taking advantage of the extra revision time.

Art Department

  • Year 7 Draw animals from The Carnival of the Animals’. You may use a range of different media
  • Year 8 Rock 'n ’Roll. Try drawing other portraits of Elvis, Bill Haley. Use a range of different media. Research Joan Miro and copy his work.

Business Studies

  • Year 10 Revise and read chapter on 'Assessing a Franchise Opportunity p33, do questions at the end of the chapter.

  • Year 7 and 8 girls can visit their Wikispace: latinmarist.wikispaces.com, and go to their individual homework page: marist7a, marist 7m, marist7r, marist8.
  • Year 12 and 13 should go to their quia pages: quia.com/pages/amartin/greekcomedy  or … /ccodyssey or … /augustus

Mrs Osmond's Classes (Latin)

  • Year 9, 10 and 11 can visit http://www.quia.com/shared/ and enter Oxford Latin in the search box and click GO.  Then they should try the exercises appropriate to their level.

Drama

  • Year 8 and Year 9 Complete the three evaluative questions set concerning their assessed piece.
  • Year 10 Answer the 4 parts of Question 1, Section A on the examination paper for GCSE, where pupils are analyzing their practical work this term.  All pupils should have a copy of questions.
  • Year 12 Timed essays on ‘Live Theatre Production Seen.’ 45 mins. Explain how the performer(s) used performance skills to contribute to the telling of the story at particular moments in one live production that you have seen and assess how successful they were.  Or  Explain how costume, accessories and props were used at particular moments to create style, location and or period in one live production that you have seen. Evaluate the success of their use.
  • Year 13 Finish reading The Handmaid's Tale.

English

  • Years 7 to 9 - Write a book review OR write a film review
  • Year 10 - Prepare for controlled assessments: Writing
  • Year 11 - Revise Poetry Anthology
  • Year 12 and 13 - Plan coursework

Geography

  • Year 7 "Investigate what it is like in Antarctica and write a three day diary of an expedition across the continent - Include pictures."  You can use www.discoveringantarctica.org.uk
  • Year 8 Why do you think Berkshire is densely populated? Answer in as much detail as possible
  • Year 9 Why do you think natural hazards cause more destruction in LEDCs than MEDCs? Answer in as much detail as possible, giving examples to back up your points,
  • Year 10 ‘How do rivers change along their course?’ Give as much detail as possible in your answeR. You can use pages 100-103 in textbook to help
  • Year 11 Complete all of ‘tourism in the UK’ booklet
  • Year 12 Read p5-7 of Philip Allan textbook and make notes, Read p4-5 of Nelson Thornes textbook and make notes, revise for health test
  • Year 13 Read p203-209 of Philip Allan textbook and make notes

  • Year 10  Review the information available from the T-drive on the Treaties that concluded the First World War and the League of Nations and then answer either of these two questions:

1. Explain why the Treaties made at Versailles and afterwards might be seen as being too harsh    (12 marks)
2. Explain why the League of Nations frequently failed in its aims to keep the peace.    (12 marks)

  • Year 11 Revise for Unit 2 mock and exam in January (and Unit 1 if necessary).  Dial in to t-drive as necessary.
  • Year 12 Begin research into the rise and rule of Napoleon Bonaparte.  Complete any notes or essays as required from current work.  If you want to practise questions you will find ‘Questions set by AQA on French Revo’ on T-drive in History Marist GCE.  There should be at least 4 of the 6 questions which you could attempt.
  • Year 13 Continue work on Unit 4 Coursework topic and research/reading and any notes necessary for Unit 3 work on the Stuarts.

ICT

There's always scope to improve your keyboarding skills. So if you're not at school why not follow this link to improve your speed and accuracy.

Mathematics

  • Years 7 – 11 log onto the mymaths.co.uk website, using your own login. Mrs Wellard will add tasks and messages for all groups on school closure days.
  • Year 12 and 13 mathematicians please continue with previous work set already, and if complete then continue with the relevant chapter in the book. You can use the Mymaths website to help you.

Modern Foreign Languages

French, Italian and Spanish

Pupils need to consolidate recent topics and to use the website www.languagesonline.org.uk  to practice vocabulary and verbs. If pupils have been recommended other websites for study purposes they must put them to good use during the day. 

German

  • Year 10 and 11 are advised by Mrs Laundon to work through their Edexcel workbook, focusing on the current topic. They can also complete the Extra exercises found from page 186 in their Edexcel textbook to develop their reading and writing skills.
  • Year 12 should complete independent reading and listening practice as already advised by Mrs Laundon. They should also take the opportunity to thoroughly revise vocabulary and grammar already studied using the suggested websites.

PE

  • Year 7, 8 and 9 The PE Department requests that all students create three Power Point slides of famous Olympic Sporting Icons. They should also create a poster about London 2012
  • Year 10 and 11 GCSE pupils can create a similar number of power point slides as above and should email Miss Blake at jen.blake@themaristschools.com to find out the topic.  In addition revision spider diagrams can be created for each pack in preparation for modules in January or June.
  • Year 12 and 13 A Level pupils should email Mrs Bishopp at jen.bishopp@themaristschools.com to find out the most recent topic for revision. In addition revision spider diagrams can be created for each pack in preparation for modules in January or June. Pupils should also use the Exam cafe CD Rom in their text books for progress questions.

  • Year 12 please read chapters on Memory, Abnormality and Stress and Social Influence
  • Year 13 should work on set essays on Relationships and Eating Disorders as per deadlines set by Mrs Bishopp

Mrs Cope

  • Year 12 Use text to complete all notes on Selection of participants (Sampling) and Sources of distortion or Bias. Attempt section on Analysis of Data – first part should not prove difficult.
  • Year 13 Read section in text about violence and virtual gaming. Complete notes. Use the internet to find out what the Byron report was about and what its conclusions were. Write a paragraph summarising this report. Complete content analysis of television program (see earlier notes on effects on antisocial behaviour)

Religious Education

  • Year 7 Identify the parts of the Mass and what happens in each part.
  • Year 8 RE review the Passover Feast.
  • Year 9 Review Islam, the mosque and prayer.
  • Year 10 Revise St Mark’s Gospel.
  • Year 11 research the topic of euthanasia.

Science

  • Year 7 and 8.  Read next double page in your text book and write the answers to questions in your exercise book.  If you are near the end of a topic, find the practice questions and Topic quiz at the end of the topic and write down your answers.
  • Year 9.  Using your year 9 course book (orange), complete any of the exercises at the end of the present topic and write your answers in your exercise book.

Mrs Batt's Classes

  • Year 10 should choose two or three questions from those at the end of the chapter they are working on and complete them.
  • Year 11 should use the time to revise using BBC Bitesize.
  • Sixth Form are expected to spend the time doing independent study/revision.

  • Year 7 Finish any tacking of your tote bag ready to sew with the machine next time you are in class.
  • Year 9 Finish any tacking or decoration of your travel product ready to be sewn with the machine next time you are in class.
  • Year 10 Either work on your portfolio or use your text book to revise the notes on the topic we have been studying in class e.g. social and environmental issues in the Textiles industry.
  • Year 11 Carry on working through your checklist for your portfolio.  If there are any worksheets you need you can find these on the T drive/Textiles/GCSE worksheets.
  • Year 13 Either revise and make notes from your A-level textiles booklets I have given you or work through your checklist for your portfolio.  If there are any worksheets you need you can find these on the T drive/Textiles/AS-A2 worksheets.
