Sport
Physical education is about pupils learning about themselves; their capabilities, their potential and their limitations. It is the foundation of all sports participation. But it goes beyond the individual and understanding themselves it's learning how to work with and to respect others. Lucy Pearson, England Cricketer and Teacher.
Physical education is an essential element in the curriculum. It not only helps to develop the child's physical competence but it also helps to develop confidence and social skills. The girls are taught by a PE specialist from reception to Year Six.
Games
In Key Stage One the emphasis is on skill development and simplified mini games.
In Key Stage Two skills are refined and improved and applied to game situations. A variety of sports are taught including netball, hockey, rounders, tennis and athletics. Inter-house netball and rounders competitions are held annually. An emphasis is put upon co-operation, sportsmanship
and tactical development as well as promoting positive attitudes towards active and healthy lifestyles.
Gymnastics
The Marist has a strong tradition of producing National winning teams in this sport. Gymnastics lessons provide opportunities for pupils to be creative, competitive and to face up to different challenges as individuals and in groups. Skills are taught progressively and the children are able to gain badges following the BAGA awards scheme. A display is held annually where every girl has the opportunity to perform in front of an audience.
Swimming
We have our own pool on campus and swimming is taught in Key Stage Two, all year round. The four main strokes are taught in addition to diving and water safety skills. An inter-house gala is an annual event in the summer terms.
