At both the Senior and Preparatory Schools, assemblies were held which actively involved the pupils. The Preparatory School girls learned about the poppy as a symbol of Remembrance due to its ability to flower in the fields of France which provided a symbol of hope and peace to those fighting there. All pupils were encouraged to discover the significance of the poppy and the importance of the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.  This marked the signing of the Armistice on the 11th November, 1918, and signalled the end of World War 1.   The ‘two minute silence’ was observed by all staff and students and prayers were said for those who lost their lives in World War 1, World War 2, and in more recent conflicts.

At the Senior School, images of war were shown during the silence which included a handwritten draft of the poignant poem by Wilfred Owen ‘Dulce et Decorum Est’ (meaning ‘it is sweet and right’).  Trumpeter, Helena Wells (Year 11) then played 'Réveille', the Last Post, as a tribute to those who had died in all wars.    Class 2 Preparatory School girls watched the laying of wreaths at the Cenotaph in London on television and then visited a local war memorial in Windlesham to see the wreaths for themselves.  Remembrance Day is their current History topic.

Karl McCloskey, Senior School Headteacher said “Each and every year we observe Remembrance Day at the school.  It is very important that we remember the sacrifices made by those brave enough to fight for their country in order to bring peace and stability to current generations.  We pay tribute to those who lost their today so that we may enjoy tomorrow.”  Mrs Jenny Peachey, Headteacher at the Preparatory School added “Remembrance Day is an important event in our school calendar.  We teach the girls about the bravery of others and the symbol of the poppy in an accessible way through art, history and story writing.  This involves the pupils and helps them to appreciate that they have freedom and peace because of the sacrifices made by other generations.”
