Marist Pupils Join the National Children’s Orchestra of Great Britain
27 June 2008
Violinist Nicole Abela (11), and cellist Catherine Porter (10), successfully auditioned for the National Children's Orchestra (NCO) of Great Britain earlier this year and have recently begun their first year in the acclaimed orchestra. The girls joined other orchestra members in playing for parents and friends at Hever Castle in Kent in June.
Every year the NCO auditions over eight hundred children who hope to become a member of one of the five age banded orchestras. Nicole says ‘I love being a part of the NCO. It has improved my playing in many ways and I have made friends with children all across the UK. It’s a privilege to play with such talented children.’ Catherine adds ‘It means a lot to me to be in the NCO. I’ve been playing the cello since I was three and it’s the first time I’ve been in a proper big orchestra. As one of the younger players the orchestra is quite challenging, but it really has helped me with my sight reading and I’ve made some nice friends.’
2008 is the NCO’s 30th Anniversary year being celebrated with £500,000 appeal to ensure that the charity thrives for the children of the future. A gala concert with all five orchestras performing will be held on 31st August at Birmingham Symphony Hall.
