The Marist Senior School’s Junior Girls swimming team won the silver medal for the 4 x 50m Junior Girls’ Medley race at ESSA’s 51st Senior School Team Championship held in Gloucester on 7th February, 2009.

During the qualifying rounds held in November last year, the girls finished as one of the fastest 16 teams in the country in their 11-14 years age group.  They went on to represent Division 10 at the championship last weekend. They were delighted to have finished second overall in the finals held this week amongst the 400 schools that participated nationally at the beginning of the championships.

ESSA promotes the teaching of swimming in schools in addition to organising swimming competitions.  The Marist School participates in the galas and competitions the ESSA holds each year as well as taking part in local swimming galas and competitions. The school has held the Ascot Schools Swimming championship title for the last 2 years.  Karen Thompson, PE teacher in charge of swimming at the Marist said “The girls have worked very hard indeed this season and I’m very proud of them all.  They really enjoyed participating in the championships and meeting pupils from other schools who share their interests. I’m looking forward to seeing them continue to grow in their sport and continue to do well in the championships in the future.”
