Christina Lamb visits the Marist
20 November 2008
On November 20, award winning journalist and author, Christina Lamb, visited the school to speak to students about her life as a wife, mother, writer and resolute war correspondent. Although seemingly impossible roles to combine, Christina delivered an inspirational and uplifting talk about her passion for her family and job and how she makes her home life and career work in a satisfying albeit unconventional way at times!
Christina Lamb is a highly respected journalist who has been involved in front line reporting from countries such as Afghanistan, Pakistan and Zimbabwe. She has been voted Foreign Correspondent of the Year five times, and has won numerous other awards during her time as a Sunday Telegraph and Sunday Times journalist and author of books including ‘Small Wars Permitting: Dispatches from Foreign Lands’ and ‘House of Stone’ which tells the story of a family divided by the war in Zimbabwe.
She described some of the life threatening experiences she has had which sit alongside precious family ones. She said “It’s a great pleasure to come to a school which puts such value on developing girls as individuals with a can-do attitude. I hope in my talk I’ve been able to show that it is possible to combine motherhood with an exciting career and that there’s a whole world out there just waiting for them.” Karl McCloskey, Headteacher at the Marist Senior School added “I cannot begin to say how honoured we feel to have had Christina join us today. She is such a positive and courageous role model for many young women. She has created a lot of interest amongst our students in current affairs and also enabled them to think about some of the important and challenging career options available to them once they leave the school. Our Sixth Form students, who are presently putting together their current affairs project, will be able to include Christina’s talk which has been truly awe inspiring for them.”
