The Marist Senior School held its inaugural Sports Awards evening at the end of term. The guest speaker was Karen Atkinson, England Netball Co-Captain. She was a fitting choice of speaker as Marist student Sophia Candappa (pictured above with Karen) has been a member of the U19 England Netball team since she was 15, and is currently touring Australia with the rest of the team. Sophia and Karen both play for Hertfordshire Mavericks in the Cooperative Netball Superleague.

The success of sports at the Marist was evident with an outstanding attendance of over 220 pupils, parents and friends. All of the girls who attended were awarded their endeavours, honours, or colours by Karen Atkinson.

Special awards were also awarded to girls in the categories of Sports Personality of the Year, which went to Margaux Cowley in Year 8. Commitment to School Sports was awarded to Amy Shingles and the Marist Sports Captain Kayla Spitzer. Elite Sportswoman of the Year was awarded to both Olivia Chilton and Sophia Candappa who have been selected to play for England during the year in Hockey and Netball respectively. These girls were presented with engraved glass tumblers as a reflection to their commitment to the PE department and their extraordinary level of sporting prowess.

Mrs Bishopp, Head of PE at the Senior School comments, “We thoroughly enjoyed the evening and we are very much looking forward to next year’s event!”
“Sports at the Marist are very popular and the PE department had an extremely successful year. So many of our girls play for their county and district in addition to our school teams,” adds Mr McCloskey, Headteacher at the Marist Senior School.
