Maristine Lisa Loh (left in 1986) is a professional pianist and director of music at The Lyceum.

Q. What are your happiest memories of your time at the Marist?
A. Being a boarder was very memorable! I made some really good friends and there was a real sense of community, especially through music making. I came to the UK from Hong Kong at the age of 16 so was only at the Marist during the Sixth Form. I had planned to study Economics at university, however, because of the huge amount of help and support I received during this difficult time I changed my career path to study music.

Q. What is the most important lesson you learnt?
A. As a result of what has happened to me since I moved to the UK, that it's alright to change your mind about the future. People often think that they're stuck but you must always remember you're allowed to change your mind! Also, being a boarder made me more independent and I realised that you can always work things out on your own. My parents weren't keen on my change of path but, as it is key to have a back- up plan, I did a postgraduate management course too.

Q. How long have you worked at The Lyceum?
A. Up until my maternity leave I had worked there for 9 years. I also teach adults and children from home.

Q. What aspects of the job do you find most rewarding?
A. When teaching, it's really rewarding to see people achieve what they didn't think was possible, especially adults. Performing is very different -  immersing myself in the music and trying to get into the skin of the composer. When it's just you performing to an audience for 1 ½ hours, it's very exhilarating!

Q. And finally, if you weren't involved in music what do you think you’d be doing?
A.
I can't imagine my life without music! But, my husband and I write food reviews for a magazine and I love food, so that's a good back-up!
